Emergency Driving Test Car Hire
Need a car for your practical driving test at short notice?
Has your driving instructor become unexpectedly unavailable, or have you lost access to the car you were planning to use for your practical driving test?
Chilterns Driver Training offers emergency driving test car hire in Aylesbury and the surrounding Chilterns area. If you already have a practical driving test booked but unexpectedly need a suitable vehicle, I may be able to help.
This service is specifically designed for learner drivers who have already completed their training and are confident, competent and ready to take their test. It includes the use of my dual-controlled instructor car and my attendance on test day.
Important: All bookings are subject to availability and a compulsory one-hour driving assessment. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can drive safely and independently at the required standard before I can agree to provide my vehicle for your test.
How much does emergency driving test car hire cost?
The total cost is £345, which must be paid in advance to confirm your booking.
| Service | Cost |
|---|---|
| Compulsory one-hour driving assessment | £45 |
| Test-day vehicle hire and instructor accompaniment (up to two hours) | £300 |
| Total | £345 |
The test-day hire includes time to familiarise yourself with the vehicle immediately before your appointment, travel associated with the test and use of the car during your practical driving test.
Any additional time required is charged at £50 per hour, with any part of an additional hour charged as a full hour.
The DVSA practical driving test fee is not included and must be paid separately.
How does the booking process work?
The process is straightforward, although the assessment is an essential part of ensuring that the car can be provided safely.
1. Get in touch
Contact me with your practical driving test centre, date and appointment time, together with a brief summary of your previous driving experience. I’ll check my availability and confirm whether I may be able to accommodate your booking.
2. Book your driving assessment
If I’m available, we’ll arrange a compulsory one-hour driving assessment before your practical test. The full £345 fee must be paid in advance to confirm the booking.
Assessment and test-day arrangements are made directly with me. As this is a standalone, short-notice service rather than an ongoing course of driving lessons, it does not include access to the Total Drive learner driver app.
3. Complete your driving assessment
During the assessment, I’ll evaluate your driving ability, including vehicle control, observation, hazard awareness, independent decision-making and your ability to respond safely to different road and traffic conditions.
This also provides an opportunity to become familiar with the vehicle you’ll be using if your test-day hire is approved.
4. Confirmation of vehicle hire
If you demonstrate the required driving standard, I’ll confirm that my vehicle can be provided for your practical test.
If I believe you’re not yet ready or that providing the vehicle would present an unacceptable safety risk, I’ll explain my concerns and the relevant refund arrangements.
5. Take your practical driving test
On test day, you’ll have use of my dual-controlled instructor car for the agreed booking period, including time to familiarise yourself with the vehicle before your appointment.
I’ll accompany you to your test and can also sit in during the practical test and listen to the examiner’s debrief if you would like me to.
Who is this service suitable for?
Emergency driving test car hire is intended for learners who are already test-ready but unexpectedly need a suitable vehicle. It is not intended to replace driving lessons or provide last-minute training for someone who has not yet reached the required standard.
You should already be capable of driving safely and independently, without assistance or prompting, and be able to demonstrate the skills expected during the DVSA practical driving test.
These include:
- Safe and confident vehicle control on different types of roads.
- Good observation, anticipation and awareness of potential hazards.
- Appropriate speed, road positioning and decision-making.
- Safe and independent driving without relying on instructions or assistance.
- Competence in the manoeuvres required for the practical driving test.
- Familiarity with the DVSA ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions.
What information will I need?
Before arranging your booking, I’ll need:
- A valid UK provisional driving licence.
- Confirmation that you’ve passed your driving theory test.
- Confirmation of your practical driving test booking, including the test centre, date and appointment time.
- Your postcode.
- An accurate summary of your previous driving experience.
- Details of any previous practical driving test attempts.
Please be honest about your driving experience, ability and any areas where you may still need assistance. This helps me determine whether the service is appropriate and reduces the risk of unnecessary expense or disappointment.
If you don’t need vehicle hire but would like an independent opinion of your driving ability, please see my Practical Driving Test Readiness Assessment service.
What happens if you don’t meet the required standard?
The compulsory driving assessment is an essential safety requirement, not simply a formality.
Although I appreciate how important your practical driving test may be, my responsibility is to ensure that you can drive safely and independently before I agree to provide my vehicle.
If your driving during the assessment shows that you’re not yet ready, or that using the vehicle for your test would present an unacceptable safety risk, I will explain my concerns and why I cannot provide the car.
My decision will be based on your demonstrated driving ability, with safety and control always taking priority.
Please understand that paying for the service does not guarantee use of my vehicle on test day. Approval is conditional on completing the assessment successfully.
If I cannot provide the car following your assessment, the refund arrangements outlined below will apply.
Cancellations and refunds
I understand that emergency driving test arrangements are often made at short notice and that circumstances can change. My cancellation and refund policy is designed to be fair while recognising that reserved assessment appointments and test-day bookings prevent me from accepting other work.
The arrangements depend on whether your driving assessment is unsuccessful or you decide to cancel the booking yourself.
If your driving assessment is unsuccessful
If I determine that your driving is not at the required standard or that it would be unsafe to provide my vehicle for the test, the following arrangements apply.
The £45 assessment fee remains payable, as the assessment has already been completed.
If your practical driving test is scheduled more than 48 hours after your assessment, the £300 test-day vehicle hire fee will normally be refunded in full.
If your practical driving test is scheduled within 48 hours of your assessment, I may retain up to £100 of the £300 test-day hire fee to cover reasonable losses resulting from the short-notice cancellation of the reserved vehicle and my time. The remaining balance will be refunded.
The £100 is a maximum deduction, not an automatic charge. The amount retained will take account of whether the reserved time can reasonably be rebooked and the actual financial loss incurred. If that loss is lower, or I’m able to rebook the time, the deduction may be reduced accordingly.
If you decide to cancel your booking
If you need to cancel or rearrange your booking, please contact me as soon as possible.
Cancelling your driving assessment
The standard 48-hour cancellation policy applies to the compulsory driving assessment. If you cancel or rearrange it with less than 48 hours’ notice, the £45 assessment fee will normally remain payable.
If you provide at least 48 hours’ notice, the assessment fee will not normally be charged, subject to the applicable Terms and Conditions and your statutory rights.
Cancelling your test-day vehicle hire
If you cancel the emergency vehicle hire booking before your assessment has taken place, any refund of the £300 test-day hire fee will be considered separately.
The amount refunded will depend on the notice provided, whether the reserved time can reasonably be rebooked and any direct financial loss resulting from the cancellation.
I will not retain more than is reasonably necessary to cover that loss. The £100 maximum deduction relating to an unsuccessful assessment within 48 hours of the test does not automatically apply to cancellations made by the customer.
Any refund due will normally be returned using the original payment method without undue delay.
How cancellation notice is calculated
Cancellation and rescheduling requests must be made during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, 9am–6pm, excluding bank holidays.
Requests received outside these hours will be treated as received on the next business day, in accordance with my Terms and Conditions.
Please bear this in mind when calculating the required 48 hours’ notice, particularly if your appointment falls close to a weekend or bank holiday.
Important booking conditions
All emergency driving test car hire bookings are subject to my Driving Lessons Terms and Conditions, particularly Sections 3, 9, 10 and 11.
These provide further details about booking requirements, payment, cancellations, refunds, test readiness and use of the vehicle.
Nothing in these arrangements affects your statutory consumer rights.
Where is emergency driving test car hire available?
I’m based in Princes Risborough and may be able to provide emergency practical driving test car hire in Aylesbury and the surrounding Chilterns area.
Availability depends on the location of your test, its scheduled date and time, and my existing driving lesson commitments.
Because this is a short-notice service, I’d recommend getting in touch as soon as you know you’ll need a vehicle. Wherever possible, it’s preferable to complete the compulsory driving assessment more than 48 hours before your practical test. However, I appreciate that this won’t always be possible with emergency bookings.
