One of the most useful features of the Total Drive learner driver app is its dedicated progress section, which I have specifically tailored around the official DVSA “Ready to Pass?” driving skills framework. The app mirrors the 27 driving skills and five levels of progress set out in the official guidance, giving you a clear picture of how your driving is developing and what still needs attention. Rather than simply being told that you are “getting better”, you can actually see your progress plotted against a recognised framework, from being introduced to a skill, through needing help and prompts, to eventually being able to handle it independently and reflect on your own driving.

Because your progress is recorded digitally, you can see your development whenever you want, rather than relying on a paper record that can be misplaced, become difficult to interpret or quickly become out of date. It also means that progress can be updated throughout your lessons, allowing you and your instructor to identify areas that need more practice and focus your future lessons where they will be most beneficial.

Your progress record provides a structured overview that helps you and your instructor identify gaps, prioritise areas for improvement and build towards the standard required for independent driving. Most importantly, it gives you a better understanding of what you need to be able to do, where you are now and what you need to work on next.

Having this information digitally makes it far more useful than a traditional paper record. You can check it between lessons, see changes over time and use it to understand your own development without having to remember what was covered several lessons ago. It provides a convenient, living record of your learning journey — helping you take greater ownership of your progress and giving you a much clearer indication of when you are genuinely approaching test readiness.

The framework is based on the official Ready to Pass? driving skills guidance, so your progress is being measured against the skills and standards that the DVSA considers important for becoming a safe, independent driver.

• See Exactly Where You’re Going I can draw directly onto real satellite images of the roads you’ll be driving on, marking out lane positions, turning points, and areas to watch out for. Instead of trying to picture a junction or roundabout from a verbal description alone, you’ll be able to see the actual road layout in front of you — with my notes and markings overlayed.
