Driving Test Car Checklist – Is Your Car Suitable?

Planning to use your own car for your practical driving test? It must meet DVSA’s requirements before the examiner can take you out. Use this interactive checklist to check the vehicle, paperwork and test-day essentials in advance, rather than discovering a problem when you arrive at the test centre.

Why checking your car matters

In a reminder shared with driving instructors on 5 November 2026, DVSA reported an increase in candidates arriving for tests in vehicles that were not roadworthy. The rules themselves have not changed, but an unsuitable vehicle can mean your test is cancelled and you have to pay to book again.

2,281

Practical driving tests were cancelled in July 2026 because candidates arrived with an unsuitable car, forgot their driving licence or arrived late, according to DVSA’s Ready to Pass campaign.

This is a combined total for all three reasons. It is not the number cancelled solely because of vehicle defects.

Remember: completing this checklist does not guarantee that DVSA will accept the vehicle.

1. Legal requirements and insurance
2. Tyres, lights and vehicle condition
3. DVSA test vehicle equipment and suitability
4. Documents and arrival on test day
Important: This checklist is a preparation aid, not a DVSA inspection or a guarantee that your test will go ahead. A car can meet the items above yet still be unsuitable for other reasons. Always consult the latest official requirements, particularly if your vehicle is unusual, modified, hired or subject to a recall.
